Insight: Wind Youth Service / "Going Gay" / 916 Ink Makes Comics / Sound Advice: Blue Dog Jam

Published June 12, 2014

Wind Youth Service - A popular destination for young people living on the streets of Sacramento has closed. But this step back for Wind Youth Services will ultimately allow the program to take two steps forward. And while the physical youth center is gone, Wind is still providing all its services, besides showers, to Sacramento's low-income young people. Executive Director of Wind Youth Services Suzi Dotson joins us to talk about the decision to close the Wind Center and plans to reopen a new location that better serves area youth.

Going Gay - Tim Rymel was a leader in the ex-gay movement in the early 90's but has since come out as being gay himself. He's recently published a book about his transition called "Going Gay - My Journey from Evangelical Christian Minister to Self-Acceptance, Love Life and Meaning." Rymel joins us in our studio to talk about his experiences, and the contention that exists between the gay and Evangelical Christian communities.

916 Ink Makes Comics - 916 Ink, a Sacramento nonprofit that promotes literacy and writing, is publishing their very first comic book for the 916 Ink Makes Comics project. For 12 weeks Sacramento comic book author Eben Burgoon has instructed third, fourth and fifth graders at Capital Heights Academy on how to write a comic book. Then in April, student-author teams paired up with local professional artists and illustrators to bring their comic book to life. We'll talk with 916 Ink's "wordslinger" Burgoon on creating the curriculum, with artist Sean Sutter on collaborating with junior authors, and with students Gleneisha and Acsah.

Sound Advice: Blue Dog Jam - Nick Brunner, the host of Capital Public Radio's Blue Dog Jam, is in to play a mix of new music & tracks recorded live in our studio (Hot City, The Harley White Jr. Orchestra) & talk about CapRadio's just launched music site.
